The AWLC has been a member of the International General Federation of Women’s Clubs since 1924. The object of this group, founded in 1890, is to unite women’s clubs and like organizations throughout the world for the purpose of sharing common interests in education, fine arts, inter-cultural understanding and service to the communities in which they live. For information about the International GFWC, you can visit www.gfwc.org.
In Colorado in 1904, High School Principal Mary Stewart penned the following prayer to share with her women's club to help set an atmosphere of positive collaboration. In 1934, it was adopted as the Official GFWC Invocation.
Keep us, oh God, from pettiness; Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face without self-pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous.
Let us take time for all things. Make us grow calm, serene, gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences. That in the big things of life we are at one. And may we strive to touch and to know that great human heart of us all. And, oh Lord, let us forget not to be kind!
